10 Things To Keep in Mind About Hillsborough Schools

An occasional look at the 10 things you need to know, or might want to know, about the business of the Hillsborough County School District.

This list of 10 things to keep in mind about the business of the Hillsborough County School District features a dynamic showing of the McLane Middle School robotics team, a count of academic scholars, recognized employees, School Board members in leadership positions, the student academic calendar and graduation dates.

  1. McLane Middle School’s Robotics Team is the 2011 Middle School VEX National Champions. According to the school district’s announcement, “the Vibots dominated with the highest score ever recorded in the middle school division.”
  2. The Hillsborough County School District this year reported 63 National Merit Scholar Finalists, 14 National Achievement Scholars and 17 National Hispanic Scholars. Collectively, this year’s 94 scholars tops last year’s total of 83 scholars.
  3. Bus driver Timothy Driggers is the school district’s Instructional Support Employee of the Year.
  4. Cassandra E. David, of Seffner Elementary School, is the school district’s Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year.
  5. Cynthia Crim, of Palm River Elementary School, is the school district’s Teacher of the Year.
  6. Doretha W. Edgecomb is the chair of the Hillsborough County School Board. This is her first stint as chair and she is in her second, four-year term representing District 5.
  7. Candy Olson is the School Board’s vice chair. She has served as chair twice and this is her third time as vice-chair. Olson is in her fifth four-year term representing District 2.
  8. The School Board at a March 29 workshop meeting will discuss the student academic calendar. The calendar committee is comprised of students, parents, community members, teachers, principals and district administrators and each year reviews the calendar based on such things as state statutes, holidays and testing dates.
  9. Key calendar dates to keep in mind as the 2010-11 school year enters its final lap: April 22 (no school for students), April 25-29 (spring break), May 30 (Memorial Day holiday, break), June 10 (last day of school).
  10. Graduation dates are as follows: June 2 (Newsome, King, Sickles and Lennard high schools); June 3 (Durant, Steinbrenner, Leto and Plant); June 6 (Armwood, Riverview, Chamberlain and East Bay); June 7 (Bloomingdale, Spoto, Plant City and Gaither); June 8 (Jefferson, Robinson, Freedom and Hillsborough); June 9 (Brandon, Strawberry Crest and Wharton); and June 10 (Blake, Middleton and Alonso).
