Float Focus: Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 83 of Brandon

Disabled American Veterans, Chapter No. 83, participated in its sixth Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade with some 30 representatives. Group's motto: "Veterans Helping Veterans."

Marching in the 2011 Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade, in the No. 4 spot, was Disabled American Veterans, Chapter No. 83.

One of the largest veteran’s groups in the area, the Brandon chapter of Disabled American Veterans featured some 30 representatives riding and walking in the 2011 Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade.

It was the group’s sixth time in the Brandon Fourth of July parade.

1. Size

Chapter 83 of Disabled American Veterans has more than 600 members in the area.

2. Motto

“Veterans Helping Veterans."

3. Float Particulars

The group’s float was put together during the year by Mark Whittleton and took about an hour to decorate with flags and banners.

4. Mission

The group specializes in helping veterans assimilate into civilian society after they have served in the armed forces. “We are here to help vets and their families get adjusted and settled back into civilian life,” said vice commander Otis Grant.

5. Kapran Scholarship

The group also donates to several veteran’s causes and oversees the Joe Kapran Scholarship Fund for college students. Kapran, a Seffner native, won the Silver Star during World War II after pulling three men from a burning tank.
