Not Just for Kids: Pottery Classes at Center Place

This month and next, there are four pottery classes at Center Place — three for kids, one for adults.

Forget the kids at this pottery class.

This one is just for adults and it's hosted at Center Place, where instructors from The Pottery Place work with adults two classes a month on Tuesdays.

The two-hour classes scheduled for this month are on Jan. 11 and 25, starting at 1 p.m.

Sample ideas are provided at each class.

"Or, you can bring your own ideas and we provide the clay and paints and anything else needed to complete a project that teaches sculpting and glazing techniques," said Sue McElligott, a Center Place employee.

The sculptures will be kiln-fired after completion at an off-site location and then returned to Center Place for pickup.

"We have three children's pottery classes and adults were asking for one of their own," McElligott said. "We talked to Alison Hamm, the owner of The Pottery Place, to see if she would add an adult class and she agreed."

Center Place started offering pottery classes about three years ago — but only for kids.

"We got started because of demand," said Lisa Rodriguez, Center Place's marketing director. "People kept asking us if we would do pottery and finally we found a way to do it without having to have our own kiln. That was always our problem before. We had no space to kiln the pieces. The classes became so popular with the children that the adults wanted to have a class for themselves."

As for the kids, the following pottery classes are scheduled for this month and next:
