“Be a Good Sport!” Local Personal Development Center in FishHawk Changing Lives by focusing on developing sportsmanship in June of 2014

“Don’t ever let the outcome of the game determine the strength of your character. Sportsmanship, integrity and kindness should be a given whether you win or lose.”   -- Dr. Robyn Silverman – Sidekicks Family Martial Arts Center’s Child Development Expert

June 2014 is Integrity Month as part of Sidekicks Family Martial Arts Center’s Powerful Words Character Development program! All students will be studying, developing and experiencing powerful life lessons focusing on understanding the value and benefit of being a person who respects the rules and the spirit of competition.  In addition to all of the physical skills that they'll be working on this month, students will be discussing and practicing the following concepts both in and out of class:

•    Playing by the rules: Being safe, fair and respectful while in competition.

•    Competitors, coaches & spectators: How should we act? What should we say?

•    Dealing with the outcome: What can we learn for the next time?

“Good sportsmanship embodies the written and unwritten rules of a game.  When we show good sportsmanship, we follow the known rules like “everyone gets a turn,” or “each competitor must wear the appropriate uniform.”  But there are also “unwritten” or “golden” rules that we must follow.  For example, good sports know that cheating, lying and bullying is wrong.  They also know that showing grace when losing and kindness when winning is an important part of being a good participant.” says Dr. Robyn Silverman, Sidekicks’ child & adolescent expert, and creator of the Powerful Words Character Development system used at the facility.

Manny Cabrera III, Chief Instructor of Sidekicks says, "We believe that sportsmanship is integral to success in athletics and more importantly in the game of life.  It’s vitally important to our entire team here to help foster both an understanding as well as a respect for sportsmanship as our students become the future leaders of our community. It’s a pleasure seeing our community recognized as a place with Powerful Character, and seeing our students lead the way! As this community’s premier Powerful Personal Development Center, we take this responsibility very seriously. We’re thrilled to help our students and our community to thrive and succeed, and Sportsmanship month is going to help us to do just that.”

Sidekicks Family Martial Arts Center’s strong curriculum and the Powerful Words Character Development system provide our students with the opportunities to become UNSTOPPABLE in life. These lessons will remain with our students for life and we're honored to help them achieve the success that they deserve” says Cabrera.
