50 Years Strong, GFWC Brandon Service League Names New Officers

A Kid's Place, ECHO and the Alice Storms Very Special Arts Festival are among the charities to benefit from the more than $13,000 raised over the past year by the Brandon Service League, which recently announced its next two years of board leadership.

 

The charity on B. Lee Elam's list for endeavors to support in his 2012 race for honorary mayor of Brandon included the club for which his wife, Pat, serves as assistant treasurer. She joins seven women newly sworn in to serve the next two year's on the club's board of directors.

The GFWC Brandon Service League, one of the Greater Brandon area's oldest service organizations, recognized recently the work of past president Candy Jackson and announced as well the group's success over the past year in raising more than $13,000 for local charities.

Benefiting from that largesse are the Emergency Care Help Organization on Parsons Avenue, a food bank and clothes closet for people who find themselves in need because of emergency situations, and A Kid’s Place on Lithia Pinecrest Road, a group of residential homes for children who have been abused or neglected and are in need of temporary shelter, and especially so if they have siblings with whom they do not want to be separated.

Among the other charities benefiting from the Brandon Service League's fundraising efforts is the Alice Storms Very Special Arts Festival, an annual event held for children with special needs.

Heading up the Brandon Service League for the next two years are:

  • Diane Burnett, second vice president
  • Bradlee Swanson, third vice president
  • JoAnn Baxter, recording secretary
  • Patty Wallace, corresponding secretary
  • Zana Turner, treasurer
  • Pat Elam, assistant treasurer

The Brandon Service League is a member of the General Federation of Woman's Clubs, and has served the community for more than 50 years.
