Get Out: Weekend Planner for Brandon and Beyond (May 13-15)

A classic play, a chance to make a difference for those going hungry in our community and chili cook-off are among the weekend offerings on tap May 13-15.

Here's a list of events to consider and, as always, we invite you suggestions as well in the comment box below.

“BYE BYE BIRDIE” ON STAGE

  • Why Go: The Village Players community theater troupe returns to stage with a cast of 48,  including Abby Bailey, as Kim MacAfee, the lucky teenager selected from among high school students nationwide vying to send Conrad Birdie off to the draft with "one last kiss," televised on The Ed Sullivan Show.  STAMP OUT HUNGER POSTAL FOOD DRIVE

  • When/Where: May 14, 12:30-3p.m., 2:30-5:30 p.m., 4:30-7 p.m. May 15, 10a.m.-12:30 p.m., 12:30-3p.m., 3p.m.-done. Feeding America, 4702 Transport Drive, Building 6, off State Road 60.
  • Why Go: Brandon’s Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO) needs volunteers for this weekend’s Stamp Out Hunger Postal Food Drive, an annual — and nationwide — event that stars with the food residents leave at their mailboxes for pickup by postal carriers during their regular runs of mail delivery. CHILI COOK-OFF

  • Why Go: Hillsborough County Commissioner Mark Sharpe will be on hand to present a proclamation for National Safe Boating Week. Call: 1-800-704-4216.

FRED ASTAIRE DANCE STUDIO GRAND OPENING

  • Why Go: Live music, including two performances by Don Juceam, called “The Frank Sinatra of Tampa Bay.” Watch professional dancers showcase Smooth and Rhythm dances then practice the moves yourself.  Buffet table for food, beer and wine. It doesn’t matter if you come with a partner. There will be live drawings throughout the night, including a grand prize drawing for a $1,000 dance package.  Plus, the studio is offering a grand opening special for everyone present: five private lessons for $50. O’BRIEN'S 5TH ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC

  • When/Where: May 15, 9:30 a.m., Walden Lake Golf Course in Plant City.
  • Why Go: The charity golf event benefits Plant City Support Our Soldiers, a local non-profit organization that send much needed supplies to members of the Armed Forces serving in Afghanistan & Iraq. The format is a four-man scramble. Shotgun start at 11 a.m. All golfers need to report and sign in by 9.30 a.m. Field is limited to the first 36 paid teams. $400 per foursome includes golf, range balls, lunch, beverages, goody bags, an O’Brien’s golf shirt, award ceremony and buffet at O’Brien’s Plant City. CRAWFISH FESTIVAL

  • When/Where: May 14, Noon-3p.m., FishHawk Ranch, 16132 Churchview Drive.
  • Why Go: Event benefits the YMCA, Emergency Care and Help Organization, The Women's Resource Center, FishHawk Sports Complex, A Kids' Place, Rotary Club of Bloomingdale-Fishhawk Foundation. EXERCISE AND MEDITATION
