Main Events (May 14): Chili Cook-off, Fred Astaire Opening, Willis Peters Prom

Postal food drive, community theater and crawfish festival notwithstanding, Brandon gets busy today with a trio of activities that recognize safe boating, smooth dancing and the importance of prom for all students.

Still to come in Greater Brandon today, a prom for special students, a chili cook-off in support of the Coast Guard and National Safe Boating Week and the grand opening of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio on Brandon Boulevard.

Here's the rundown:

  • First Annual Chili Cook-Off / May 14 / 4:30 p.m. / Flotilla 74 Building, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, 3006 Kings Ave., Brandon / Hillsborough County Commissioner Mark Sharpe is scheduled to be in attendance to present a proclamation for National Safe Boating Week.

  • Fred Astaire Dance Studio / Grand opening, May 14 / 6 -9 p.m. / Fred Astaire Dance Studio, 1076 E Brandon Blvd.  / Live music, including two performances by Don Juceam, who has been called "the Frank Sinatra of Tampa Bay.” Professional dancers showcase both smooth and rhythm dances, then practice the moves yourself, with or without a partner.  Buffet table, beer and wine. Live drawings throughout the night, including a grand prize drawing for a $1,000 dance package.  Those present eligible for a grand opening special: five private lessons for $50. / Free / Call: (813) 438-5963

 

  • Willis Peters Exceptional Student Education Center Prom / May 14 / 7 p.m. / Brandon Elks Lodge, 800 Centennial Lodge Drive / For years, a very special night backed with strong community support. The Elks donate their lodge and Dennis Lee and his band perform gratis.  / “We are convinced that this is the only way these kids are going to get a prom, is if we donate our space,” said Dennis Osborn, past exalted ruler, or president, of the BrandonElks. “A number of us come and kind of just observe the prom. It’s neat to watch the kids during the prom. Some of them are physically challenged and a number of them are mentally challenged but they all enjoy it, and watching the kids dance, it’s just great.”
