Things To Do: Weekend Calendar for Greater Brandon (May 28-29)

Yard sale, book sale, classic car show, scouting, jazz, patriotic songs, a musical swap meet, "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Les Miserables" promise to keep Greater Brandonites busy on this last weekend before high school graduations.

The final productions of “Bye-Bye Birdie” and "Les Miserables," a Friends of the Library book sale and a classic car show, yard sale and jazz concert are among the many things to do in Greater Brandon this weekend, May 28-29.

"BYE BYE BIRDIE"

  • When/Where: May 28-29, 8 p.m., James McCabe Theater, 506 Fifth St., Valrico.
  • Why Go: community theater troupe returns to the stage with a cast of 48, including Abby Bailey, as Kim MacAfee, the lucky teenager selected from among high school students nationwide vying to send Conrad Birdie off to the draft with "one last kiss," televised on The Ed Sullivan Show. Directed by April Golombek.

"LES MISERABLES"

  • When/Where: May 28 at 7:30 p.m.; May 29 at 3:30 p.m., Riverview High School Theater, 11311 Boyette Road, Riverview
  • Why Go: Last two performances of the joint production of the theater departments at Newsome and Riverview high schools. On stage is the school edition of the 25-year-old, award winning musical on tour nationally. The musical has been translated into 21 languages; productions have played in 42 countries and in 291 cities. ickets: $10. Call: (813) 671-5011, Ext. 259.

SEFFNER/MANGO LIBRARY BOOK SALE

  • When/Where: May 28, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Seffner Library, 401 N Kingsway Road
  • Why Go: Proceeds from the Friends of the Seffner/Mango Library book sale support programs that otherwise could not be funded, such as the monthly science program for students in grade school.

ANNUAL BAZAAR AND YARD SALE

  • When/Where: May 28, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Boardwalk of Riverview, 10011 Water Works Lane, Riverview
  • Why Go: Find treasurers and necessities and things you might just like to have in the collection of items deemed unnecessary by area neighbors and residents. Hosted by the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce  at the Boardwalk of Riverview offices located off Gibsonton Drive (between U.S. 301 and I-75), 10011 Water Works Lane, Riverview. Find

MUSICAL SWAP MEET

  • When/Where: May 28, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Music Showcase, 402 Oakfield Drive, Brandon
  • Why Go:  Music Showcase, 402 Oakfield Drive, Brandon, will host its first swap meet May 28 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Anyone wishing to sell an instrument should contact Music Showcase before May 14 to reserve a spot at the swap meet, (813) 685-5998.

SCOUT EXPERIENCE

  • When/Where: May 28, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Winthrop Pole Barn, 11349 Bloomingdale Ave.
  • Why Go: Local Cub Scouts as well as those considering joining the Scouts will have a chance to experience some of the fun activities Scouting offers when the Gulf Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts hosts a Spring Scout Experience Saturday at the Winthrop Pole Barn. Cub Scouts and would-be Cub Scouts, including boys entering first grade in the fall, are invited to participate in such activities as fishing, archery, wrist rockets, a pinewood derby and a rain-gutter regatta. In addition Troop 1986 will have a camp site set up for boys to explore. There also will be a Bobcat Boot Camp for new Scouts to allow boys to earn their first badge by reciting the Cub Scout motto. CLASSIC CAR SHOW

  • When/Where: May 28, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Bay Life Church, 1017 Kingsway Road.
  • Why Go:   will host its annual Classic Car Show Saturday, May 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 1017 Kingsway Road, Brandon. There will be a variety of classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars, trucks and exotic cars. In addition, there will be a number of vendors including Chick-fil-A and Jaymer-Que BBQ, a children's coloring contest, arts and crafts, stamping and scrapbooking classes and a live band. The day will begin with a special Memorial Day recognition of the Armed Forces. The Tampa Bay Rays' Street Team will be on hand to talk about driving safety for teens. Throughout the day, there will be food, beverages, door prizes donated by local businesses and a 50/50 drawing. All proceeds from the event go to the church's summer mission trips. The event is free. JAZZ CONCERT

  • When/Where: May 28, 4 p.m., St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 3315 Bryan Road
  • Why Go: Support and learn more about the . This show features a collection of popular classics including Frank Sinatra in Concert, As Time Goes By, A Tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. and many other popular tunes. Call: (813) 569-1771

PATRIOTIC SONGS

  • When/Where: May 28, 6:30 p.m., The Farm, 7818 Lithia-Pinecrest Road
  • Why Go:  The Farm will host a special flag ceremony at its concert May 28 in honor of the members of the military who have paid the ultimate price. Residents are invited to bring their guitars, banjos, fiddles or other acoustic instruments and join the fun singing about God and country. Hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the music will begin at 7 p.m. There is no admission fee but donations are appreciated.
