Betty Jo Tompkins, a long-time member of the fair's board of directors, is the newly named president of the Florida 4-H Foundation. She also is a member of the group's hall of fame.

Working with such groups as the Florida 4-H and the Florida FFA Association gives students "an edge in public speaking, in interviewing, in keeping records," Tompkins said. "All these are things they need to be successful in their careers and participating in the Hillsborough County Fair helps them build these skills."

Tompkins has been involved with the Hillsborough County Fair throughout its many years, at the Florida State Fairgrounds, at Raymond James Stadium, at the Winthrop Pole Barn and now at its permanent home at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds in Dover, just east of Brandon off State Road 60, at 217 Sydney Washer Road.

"I look forward to the fair every year," Tompkins said. "To the sense of accomplishment of the young people, who try something they might never have tried before. They might be terrified at first to engage in public speaking, but after awhile you see them bloom and blossom."

The five-day fair opened Oct. 17, at 5 p.m., and is scheduled to close Oct. 21, at 9 p.m. Each day features "continuous shows in the entertainment tent with Donny and Sandy and a talent showcase of variety acts."

Also at the fair, exhibits, shows, vendors and a midway.
