Five Family Things To Do: ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,’ ‘Raise the Roof’ and Links to Cinema Trailers

Plant City Entertainment and a variety show at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico are on tap this weekend, featuring musical comedy and student variety show entertainment, respectively. Links to G-rated and PG-rated movies included.

Take to the audience this weekend for family friendly theater and cinema featuring a variety show of student thespians honing their skills for upcoming competitions and a community theater troupe staging the musical comedy, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” Links to trailers for family movies (G-rated and PG-rated) included as well.

  • Friday night is juniors night at the James McCabe Theater, where students in middle school grades will gain performance experience in a variety show designed for that purpose. “Raise the Roof” proceeds go toward repairs for theater. The Feb. 25 show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for kids. The variety show starring high school students is Feb. 26. The James McCabe Theater is at 506 Fifth Street.
  • The encore presentation of “A Musical Tribute to the Best of Broadway” takes place Feb. 26 at the Scientology Life Improvement Center in Plant City, at 102 North Collins Street.  The show was at Seffner’s Lenna Hall in January. It features six singers, ages 14 to 21, performing songs from “the very best Broadway shows,” including “Phantom of the Opera,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “South Pacific.” “Grease,” “Pippin” and “Guys and Dolls.” Ticket cost $10 at the door; seating is limited.   • AMC The Regency 20 has two G-rated movies on tap this weekend: “Gnome and Juliet,” the animated fantasy based on a timeless feud and a forbidden love (see the trailer) and “Justin Bierber Never Say Never” (see the trailer)  this week features a “Director’s Fan Cut,” including 40 minutes of  “new Bieber footage.”
  • has seven PG-13 rated movies on screen this weekend: “I Am Number Four” and the “I Am Number Four IMAX Experience” (see the trailer), “Just Go With It” (view the trailer), “The Eagle” (view the trailer), “The Green Hornet” (view the trailer), “The Rite” and “Unknown” (view the trailer).
  • Plant City Entertainment wraps up its two-weekend run of the musical, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” based on the 1988, PG-rated movie featuring Steve Martin and Michael Caine. Show dates are Feb. 24-26. Curtain time is 7 p.m. All performances at the Plant City Entertainment Theatre, at 101 N. Thomas Street. Tickets cost $10 for members or group advance sales; $12 for seniors and students through grade 12; and $14 for general admission.
