Five Things Brandon Patch Is Covering This Week

Brandon Patch, starting Feb. 14, is set to cover an art show and auditions at the McCabe Theater, long-time Brandon resident Helen Mulrennan Young, the life and times of Beatrice Shugrue and the Brandon High wrestling team's quest for a 20th state

Truly unique art and undying passion and perseverance are on tap for coverage this week at Brandon Patch, where we join in the celebration of the visual and performing arts; of long lives, well lived; and of a high school wrestling team that continues to streak ahead to greatness.

  1. The "Heart & Soul" Scott King art show for Valentine's Day, featuring Scott King, Tom Mueller and Dick Patterson, with Warren Gibson, Holly Strickland, photography by Kevin Nueman, custom figures by Carlton Jones and miniaturist, award-winning artist Ruth Soucek. Live performances as well, at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico.
  2. What makes people take to the spotlight on the community theater stage? We ask the folks auditioning for roles in the family friendly production of "," in production with the Village Players at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico.
  3. Helen Mulrennan Young, a Brandon High graduate and long-time member of the Greater Brandon Kiwanis Club, turns 88 this month. Young's family is the namesake of Mulrennan Middle School in Valrico and Young continues to meet every other month at the Golden Corral with her graduating class from Brandon High.
  4. The life and times of Beatrice Shugrue, who turns 100 on Feb. 18.
  5. The Brandon High School wrestling team and its quest to clinch the school's 11th consecutive state title — and 20th state crown overall. In all, Brandon has won 30 region championships, and 22 straight. Brandon wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes have qualified for the state finals at Lakeland, the second year in a row the team has qualified in all 14 slots. (Related Coverage: )
