Plant City Community Choir Marks 5 Years

A retrospective concert is planned June 1 at Eastside Baptist Church for the Plant City Community Choir, which features singers and performances from and for people living in Brandon, Lakeland, Plant City and Valrico.

 

Help commemorate the success of a "vocal experiment" that five years ago launched with 12 members and an inaugural concert at The Church on the Rock in Plant City, with a June 1 concert planned in Plant City.

Since its start in 2008 the Plant City Community Choir has performed 10 local concerts and has appeared in seven performances of the Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir in Orlando, at the Epcot theme park at Walt Disney's World Resort.

The Plant City Community Choir draws members and audiences from Brandon, Lakeland, Plant City and Valrico. The group has 30 stable members and sometimes performs in even greater numbers, accompanied by musicians.

 A retrospective concert is planned for June 1 at Eastside Baptist Church, at 1318 East Calhoun St. in Plant City. The choir will perform Shout for Joy, Rejoice With Exceeding Great Joy and Joy to the World, a three-song tribute to the Disney candlelight processional. Then, from the 2012 Songs of Hope concert, the choir will perform Requiem and Set Me as a Seal.

Also on tap are more works from each of the choir's past concert seasons, including:

  • Sing Me to Heaven, a piece from the choir's first concert, performed in December 2008.
  • The choir's signature arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner.
  • A Hand Up, Not a Handout, an original song written for the choir.
  • The Awakening, now the choir's anthem.

VIP tickets, which include reserved seating and an after-concert reception, cost $10 and are available only online. Tickets at the door, June 1, will cost $7 and will be available starting at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m and the performance is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
