Breast Cancer Application Deadline Extended by Music Showcase

The Music Showcase music store, education and performance center in Brandon has extended its deadline to Friday, Oct. 5, for its breast cancer awareness fundraiser recipient.

Music Showcase has extended until close of business Friday the deadline for submitting applications for this year’s recipient of fundraising dollars raised for a woman battling breast cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and throughout the month Music Showcase will be selling cookies, cupcakes, pink flower pens and ribbon cards to support the cause of a local woman battling the disease.

Application forms are available at Music Showcase and essentially include space for name, address, phone number and email for the person being nominated, as well as for the person making the nomination.

“Don’t forget to submit your paragraph or story along with the nomination form,” notes a reminder on the application.

A notice for the initiative to award a local resident with funds and services to support them as they battle for a cure reads in part as follows:

[Over] the past three years we have tweaked and refined our breast cancer fundraising efforts on a daily basis and this year we are excited to announce not only small efforts on a daily basis to raise monies but [also] an entire day dedicated to supporting our recipient. We will have a Fall Festival for the community to bring children out to play games, make crafts, sing karaoke, dance and have a blast. This event is free admission and all monies raised will go toward the total amount given to the recipient. Then, in the evening, we will have an adults-only Costume Dance Party, with live entertainment, dancing and food, again with all monies going toward the recipient.

That recipient will be selected next week at Music Showcase, said Debbie Campos, director of the Music Showcase Elite Center. The application deadline has been extended through 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. For information, call Campos at 813-685-5998. Or, email her at debracampos@musicshowcaseonline.com.

"Last year we awarded Sherry Ellis about $1,300 and this year we're hoping to double that," Campos said in an interview at Music Showcase on Oct. 3.

The selection is "based on the individual who needs it the most," Campos said. "They might not have money, they might have major needs, they might be single mothers or women with no spouses."

Campos noted that last year Ellis told Music Showcase organizers that while going through treatment, she needed "people to mow her yard, clean her house and fix her dinners."

This year, Music Showcase has approached, and is asking, area businesses to provide services as well as donations. For $50, a sponsor will be listed on the Musica Showcase Web site through October. Also, there will be a sponsors' table at the two events Oct. 20 -- the daylong fall festival for kids and the evening costume party for adults.

"Give us your cards and brochures and we'll make sure they get displayed," Campos said.
