Brandon Farmer's Market Returns to Winthrop

The Winthrop neotraditional town in the Greater Brandon community of Riverview is again hosting a weekly farmer's market, this time in the Winthrop Pole Barn. The event, now known as the "Brandon Fresh Market," runs Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fresh fruits and vegetables along with herbs, arts and crafts and other homegrown products were in store for visitors to the first Brandon Saturday Market at the Winthrop Pole Barn on June 2.

The outdoor venue is at Pole Barn at 11349 Bloomingdale Ave., between Watson and Providence roads in Riverview.

Organized by Wilson Almonte, president of Fat Cow Markets, the market will be open every Saturday, throughout the year, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We have a huge variety of vendors that have new merchandise and farm fresh products every week," said Almonte, who noted that already more than 50 vendors have expressed an interest in the market.

Vendors will sell a variety of products, including:

  • Fresh produce
  • Seafood
  • Specialty food items
  • Jams
  • Plants
  • Orchids
  • Organic products
  • Honey
  • Gourmet coffee
  • Cheese
  • Fresh-baked bread and bakery goods
  • Body scrubs
  • Handmade soaps
  • Hand-crafted jewelry and wood crafts
  • Eggs
  • Nuts
  • Ethnic foods
  • Smoothies.

Almonte said the market will serve as a venue for the hundreds of home-based businesses in the Brandon area. He's hoping it also will serve as a weekly gathering place for the community, noting that its central location on Bloomingdale Avenue makes it accessible to residents from throughout the area.

It's a chance, Almonte added for residents to purchase homegrown and homemade products at reasonable prices direct from the vendor.

A portion of the booth rental proceeds will support the artists at the Beaux Arts Gallery in Winthrop.

To become a vendor, visit the market's website or contact Almonte at Wilson@goindoormarketing.com.

This is wondeful news!! I have so missed buying fresh items locally at a market place such as this. Used to shop the fresh market when it was previously held at Winthrop. Thanks so much for bringing it back!! Am hoping the Amish are there with their breads & butter - my favorite booth. See you Saturday!

Thank you for this article! I really hope this market is successful. Brandon could use a good farmers market!

Also, the link for the market is wrong. The market website is www.brandonmarket.net

Well...I finally remembered today, June 16th, to run down to the Fresh Market. Arrived at 12:20 pm and to my surprize NO ONE was there! Not one vehicle near, or around, the pole barn. No signs, nothing! There were two cars parked next door at that little building but no signs & this article said "outside at the pole barn". To say the least I was disappointed. What gives? Did it fold already? Back to Parkesdale for my supplies - at least I know they are there, open & have signage. Brandon.......leaves soooo much to be desired.

It does appear that the market is no longer taking place. We will get the formal word on this and post in time before next week's scheduled market.

Linda - Thank you for the reply, as disappointing as it is. That means it lasted 1-2 weeks/Saturday's - doesn't make sense - didn't even give it a chance. Please, if you could delve into this I'd be curious why it came and went so fast. Typical Brandon - here today, gone tomorrow - WHAT is wrong with this place???

The market is still going on. This weekend, the market was moved to the Florida State Fairgrounds for a Food Expo. They will be back at Winthrop next Saturday and every Saturday. Please come back out next Saturday to support the market.

Ok, so now the market is closing until September. They are having problems with the electricity in the pole barn and also having issues with the Winthrop shops. They are not allowed to have vendors that will compete with the Winthrop Shops which leaves out a lot of food vendors. Market manager is looking for a new spot.

This company...or organizer is a joke. They have been scamming the vendors by getting them to pay for the events and then not showing up at all...and not calling to cancel...the big thing...they will not refund the money. They have done this to several vendors and we are trying to corner this guy so if you see WILSON around post here so we can go and collect our money...one way or another.

Do not work with this organizer...he has several company names out there...he is a scammer...His name is Wilson Amonte...he makes promises and commitments that he can not keep.
