A Guy Fawkes "holiday" celebrated by Americans and British today will prompt endless postings of "Remember, Remember, the fifth of November / The Gunpowder, Treason and plot" and could bring Facebook down as part of a hacking.
The day originally honored how a plot to blow up Parliament was foiled when on Nov. 5, 1605 a conspirator, Guy Fawkes, was arrested while guarding the explosives.
But it's meaning and cause has changed through the years, becoming more of a rally cry of protestors in America, Time.com explains:
In recent years, Fawkes' legacy has broadened. He provided the inspiration for the tile character in the Wachowski brothers' V for Vendetta, in which a masked crusader embarks on a terrorist campaign against a totalitarian British dystopia. Fawkes also proved an effective fundraising rally cry for onetime U.S. presidential candidate Ron Paul, who garnered more than $4 million on the holiday in 2007 from a website commemorating Fawkes.
Since the movie and graphic novel V for Vendetta were released, the mask has become iconic at protests and rallies, including Occupy Wall Street.
Instead of celebrating the defeat of an anarchist, Guy Fawkes Day has appeared to turn into a day to celebrate and cause anarchy.
This year, hackers from the group Anonymous, are targeting Facebook and Farmville game creator Zynga, Time.com reports. The group states that it will not attack the sites if Zynga decides not to lay off 1,000 workers.
The group posted the following message on its website, and added that Anonymous is beginning to leak documents:
Zynga customers and Facebook users , We are anonymous . During the last few days anonymous has been targeting Zynga for the outrageous treatment of their employees and their actions against many developers .
We have come to believe that this actions of Zynga will result in massive layoff of a thousand people and legal actions against everyone that speaks to the public about this plan.
It will also come to end of the US game market as we know it as all this jobs will be replaced in other more convenient financial countries.
With a billion dollars cash sitting in a bank we do believe that such actions are an insult to the population and the behaviour of corporations like Zynga must change.
Anonymous could not allow this to happen so it's starting to release confidential documents we have leaked on this plan.
As we speak we are planning to release also all the games we've taken from their servers for free.
That being said we will stop the idea of the distribution of such games if Zynga will cease immediately the plan.
While Facebook appears to be fully functional so far today, NBC.com pages were attacked and de-faced along with a Lady Gaga fansite, ArtsTechnica.com reports. The group claiming responsibility for that attack is Pyknic.
Regardless of what happens each year, that one famous anonymous British poem created to reflect on that day in Britain will be endlessly recited:
“Remember, remember, the fifth of November. / The gunpowder, treason and plot. / I see no reason why gunpowder treason / should ever be forgot.”
