‘Django Unchained,’ ‘Les Miserables,’ Movie Times and Trailers

Strong Christmas Day openings for Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and "Les Miserables" wrap up a year that is poised to set a box-office record. Buy your tickets for these show times at AMC The Regency 20 in Brandon.

 

Big- hit on-Christmas honors go to Les Miserables and Django Unchained, which, according to an Entertainment News report online, scored the second-biggest and third-biggest Christmas Day debuts ever, respectively.

According to USAToday.com, Sherlock Holmes holds the all-time record, with $24.6 million collected in box-office receipts on Christmas Day 2009.

This year, Tarantino's film raked in $15 million; Les Miserables topped that, with $18.1 million.

"If box-office returns were Oscar votes, Les Miserables and Django Unchained would be surging," notes the eonline.com report.

Les Miserables also reportedly set a new record for movie-musical opening day, which previously had been held by High School Musical 3.

  • Set in the south two years before the Civil War.
  • Jamie Foxx plays Django, "a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz," played by Christoph Waltz. "Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles — dead or alive."
  • Top billing also goes to Leonardo DiCaprio (Calvin Candie), Kerry Washington (Broomhilda) and Samuel L. Jackson (Stephen).
  • The film, rated R, is most definitely not for children. "Plenty of thought should be given as to whether anyone under 17 should bear witness to the cruelty and violence in Quentin Tarantino's spaghetti western/slave revenge fantasy," according to the Family Room at Entertainment Weekly online. "
  • Nominated for five Golden Globe awards, for Best Director - Motion Picture (Quentin Tarantino), Best Motion Picture - Drama; Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz); and Best Screenplay - Motion Picture (Quentin Tarantino).
