The sign outside the building and repurposed yellow school bus on Falkenburg Road notes that "Taco Bus Brandon" is "Opening Spring 2013." The date for that grand opening has been set.
A grand opening party is set for May 28, according to a report written in the Tampa Bay edition of The Current.
According Taco Bus online, the restaurant features "traditional recipes from every region of the country, each prepared daily with fresh ingredients in a custom kitchen." Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu features as well a variety of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free selections.
Chef Rene Valenzuela is noted as the owner of both Taco Bus and Taqueria Monterrey. "I grew up in Mexico serving and enjoying Mexican street food," he says on the Web site, "and I'm proud that the Taco Bus can continue this tradition here in Florida."
"Brandon is somewhere I always wanted to be," he told The Current reporter Kevin Brady. "We have invested in what I think is a very good location."
Valenzuela noted that the Brandon location would be "our largest Taco Bus so far."
Calling it "perhaps Tampa's most famous restaurant," the Tampa Bay Times, in a Dec. 13 report, notes that the Mexican restaurant has "become a Tampa institution in just 10 years" and "has been featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Network and Adam Richman's Man Vs. Food on the Travel Channel."
"The Brandon location will be the largest of all the Taco Bus restaurants, with seating for about 100 people inside and another 40 outside," according to the Tampa Bay Times report.
The first Taco Bus opened in Seminole Heights. Additional locations are in St. Petersburg, North Tampa and downtown Tampa (see list below).
