O'Brien's Fire-Breathing Rubber Duckies Break Last Year's Record

Miles for Moffitt team, the O'Brien's Fire-Breathing Rubber Duckies gets closer to their $20,000 goal.

The Duckies have done it again!

We have beaten last year's record of 62 for the Miles for Moffitt 5K.

We are at 65 walkers, just 35 walkers away from our 100 walker goal.

We have also beaten our fundraising record. We've raised $12,000, so we are $8,000 short of our $20,000 goal.

I have humbly asked that each of our duckies encourage two friends to sign up, either as a walker or a virtual walker. What better way to pay it forward? For anyone who has been touched by cancer as I have, this is the best way that I have found to give cancer a big sucker punch in the face, and I promise you, it feels really good!

Let's fight for a world where cancer is a horrible memory and we never have to see anyone we love endure chemo. This year our race is dedicated to sheriff's deputies Justin Hancock and Dan Witt; and with every step we carry in our hearts everyone we've lost to this horrid disease and everyone who is still kicking cancer's butt.

Anyone who wishes to join our team should go to: www.milesformoffitt.kintera.org/ofbrd.

Online registration ends on Sunday, May 5 at midnight. After that, it goes up to $45 and you have to register in person. All registration fees count toward our $20,000 goal.

We have one fundraiser left: the Ken-Ducky Derby. There are lots of ways that the community can help. As you know, this is our last big push to make that goal. I know we can do it!

Here's the info on our Ken-Ducky Derby:

  • May 4, 4 to 8 p.m. at O'Brien's Irish Pub in Brandon
  • Duckies can be adopted at O'Brien's Plant City and Brandon for $5.  If any are left, they can be adopted on the day of the event. They can also be adopted on our website at www.duckcancer.com
  • Prizes: 1st place- trip to Hawaii;  2nd place- cruise to Bahamas; 3rd place- gas card.
  • This year, we have added a "Corporate Race." Businesses can purchase "corporate ducks" for $100 each. The prize for this race is a happy hour at O'Brien's in Brandon for up to 20 employees.
  • Businesses can also sponsor heats of the race. Of course, we are so appreciative for any support from our community sponsors. There are some perks from being Blue, Pink and Gold Level sponsors (Blue-$250, Pink-$500 and Gold-$1000). Sponsors at this level can hang a banner at the derby and our celebration concert. They will be featured with a clickable link on our www.duckcancer.com website. If we get a Gold sponsor, they will sponsor the final heat of the Derby.
