5 Things To Know Today: May 12

For Greater Brandonites, the list includes a Bunco fundraiser, All Children's guild meeting, upcoming activities for seniors to commemorate Older Americans Month and a shout out to the music educator of the year — from Brandon High.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office holds a press conference today to unveil the results of a five-month investigation while members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon prepare for a barbeque and Bunco fundraiser tonight. These are among the items on the list of five things to know today, May 12: 

  1. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon sponsors tonight a barbeque and Bunco night at the Brandon Eagles Club at 1810 Front Street. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the dice game getting underway from 7-9 p.m. The $20 cost of admission includes meal, one raffle ticket, snacks and Bunco prizes. Cash bar with Kiwanis men as hosts earning tips for charity. Can’t stay for the night? Support Kiwanis by purchasing a $5 barbeque meal to go. Walk-ins are welcome. Proceeds benefit the the Greater Brandon Kiwanis Founation and the “Terrific Kids” program in Greater Brandon schools.
  2. The Brandon branch of the All Children’s Hospital Guild meets for its monthly meeting tonight, at All Children’s Specialty Care of Brandon, 885 South Parsons Ave. Meeting in the conference room, the group will elect the 2011-12 executive board. The meeting starts 6:30 p.m. and is open to guild members and anyone interested in finding out more about the guild and its mission to support All Children’s Hospital and programs that support its patients and their special health needs in the Greater Brandon area. Attendees are asked to bring an appetizer or bag of chips or dessert to share.
  3. Don Langland, the orchestra director at Brandon High School, has been named the Music Educator of the Year for the 2010-11 school year. The honor comes from the Florida Music Educators Association.
  4. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a press conference today at 1:30 p.m. in Ybor to announce the conclusion of a five-month criminal investigation. Joining the sheriff’s office at the press conferences will be representatives of the Hillsborough County Office of the State Attorney and the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
  5. May is Older Americans Month and activities in commemoration are planned for Brandon. “A Night in Venice,” a prom for seniors, is scheduled for May 20 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Brandon Recreation Center at 502 East Sadie St. The jazz band from Durant High School is scheduled to perform. The annual prom includes dancing, food, games, music and the crowning of a prom king and queen. Also, on May 25, Hillsborough County Aging Services will host exercise and nutrition education activities at each of the county’s eight senior centers, including the Brandon Senior Center at 612 East Parsons Ave. It’s all part of National Senior Health and Fitness Day.
