AMVETS Post 44 Holds ‘Last Yard Sale’ As Group Eyes New Home

The group for active and retired military personnel is looking at several possible locations in the Greater Brandon area.

Member of AMVETS Post 44 said goodbye to some bargains June 4 as they prepared a move to a new home in Brandon.

Billed as the group’s “Final Yard Sale,” the veteran’s group emptied the closets, bookcases and searched under the pillows for goods and nick-nacks for the sale.

It will likely be the last at the group’s current headquarters, a small house at 318 Pauls Drive they have occupied since 1999. High rent and a chance to invest in their own building has the group looking at several new locations in the Brandon area, said Post 44 Commander Dan Mayo.

“Nothing is definite yet but we are looking at a couple of new places. We want something where we can invest and that belongs to us,” Mayo said.

Once in their new home, the group plans to launch classes for active and retired vets with a view to helping their comrades with everything from finding jobs to benefits. “We want to have computers in there so we can help with any problems they might have.”

A support group for all active and retired military personnel with more than 200 members in the Greater Brandon area, the post was founded in 1996. In addition to their work with the military, the group also runs a Toys for Tots drive and assists several other local charities.

Mike Whitt, the post’s incoming commander, said the group is always ready to assist the brothers and sisters in arms. “It’s a very welcoming and family oriented group.”
