Brandon Area Genealogical and Historical Society Meets Monthly

Trace your family's history using genealogical research and help from the Brandon Area Genealogical and Historical Society. The group's next meeting is Sept. 13 at the Bloomingdale Regional Library.

For many, tracing the lineage of family history is a rewarding experience. While genealogy research can take countless hours, patience and dedication, the rewards of mapping out one’s family history throughout the generations can make for a gratifying and educational project that will have a timeless benefit for many.

The Brandon Area Genealogical and Historical Society (BAGHS), which meets every second Tuesday of the month at the , encourages and instructs members in the performance of genealogical research by teaching its members how to promote the maintenance of quality genealogical standards and source documentation.

Scott Peeler Jr., president of BAGHS, has been doing genealogical research since he was a college student at the University of South Florida in 1968.

“Of course, back then it was all looking through records and books as there was no Internet in those days,” joked Peeler.

The society was originally formed in 1955 by Tom and the late Jean Smith, a Brandon couple who, at that time, had been doing genealogy for some 20 years and wanted to share their interest and knowledge of genealogy with others in their community.
