Brandon’s Newest Honorary Mayor: Cami Gibertini

The race was close and the receipts are in and the candidate sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon is duly named the newest honorary mayor of Brandon.

Cami Gibertini has been named the newest honorary mayor of Brandon after an accounting of receipts was taken at the law offices of B. Lee Elam.

The two candidates — Gibertini and Barbara Schwabe — collectively raised almost $72,000 in the one-month campaign that kicked off June 1 and officially ends the morning of the Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade.

“The economy’s not booming along and to raise $72,000 in a matter of a month is a great accomplishment,” said Sam Creaseman, president of the Community Roundtable, which runs both the honorary mayor’s race and the parade itself. “Both of these women worked very hard and had a great deal of support."

“It was fun,” said Barbara Schwabe, who ran a close race on behalf of the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association. “All the people who helped me raise all the money, indeed, people care."

Gibertini, whose race was sponsored by the Kiwanie Club of Greater Brandon, said she enjoyed running her race as well and that she respected her “classy running mate.”

“It was wonderful to have someone so established in the community to work alongside and to raise money for charities,” Gibertini said.

The Community Roundtable runs the annual race for honorary mayor, collecting 10 percent of the  proceeds raised. The not-for-profit group serves as an umbrella organization for area charities. It also runs the Fourth of July parade and awards each year Father of the Year, the Alice B. Tompkins Community Service Award and the Non-Profit of the Year Award. This year’s recipients, respectively, are Joseph Davis, Sandy Pullinger and Center Place.

In addition to the 10 percent raised for the Roundtable, each mayoral candidate gives 10 percent as well to their respective sponsoring charities.

The rest of the money is given to each candidate’s selected charities. If no additional charities are named, the sponsoring charity gets the proceeds, which was the case in Schwabe’s raise.

Gibertini’s race raised money as well for the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO) and the Greater Brandon area YMCA’s.

Gibertini joins this list of honorary mayors:
