Cheapest Gas Report: July 9

Tampa, Florida, state and national gas prices and trends included in this report on Greater Brandon prices in Hillsborough County. Prices today are the lowest in the area since Brandon Patch first reported on cheapest gas, in March.

The search is on for the cheapest gas you can find and today’s best bet in Brandon might be these top three lowest prices found at GasBuddy.com on July 9 at 9:45 a.m.

The site, updated daily with visitor reports, at this reporting for regular gasoline lists 23 stations for Brandon, with prices ranging from $3.43 to $3.59 per gallon.

For premium gas, prices ranged from $3.63 to $3.99 per gallon, based on reported visitor updates for 16 stations. (The second-to-highest prices in each category were 3.44 and 3.64, respectively.)

For midgrade fuel, prices ranged from $3.60 to $3.79, with reports from 15 stations. (The second-to-highest price was $3.63.)

For diesel fuel, prices ranged from $3.73 to $3.83, with reports on eight stations.

In the 16 prior “Cheapest Gas” postings  filed by Brandon Patch, the lowest price for regular gas was reported June 26 ($3.40). The highest price for regular gas reported to date: $3,79, on May 10.

Prices across the states, as of July 9, ranged from 3.375 in South Carolina (where prices were up) to 3.889 in Connecticut (where prices were down). Illinois was next highest at 3.887, followed by New York (3.843), Michigan (3.789) and Rhode Island (3.774). (Note: the list was incomplete, with only 31 state listed. States not noted included Alaska and Hawaii and also the District of Columbia.)

Florida placed 13th on the truncated list from lowest- to-highest priced gasoline. Florida was at 3.585 (up from 3.480 on June 30 and down from 3.909 on May 10). 

Nationwide, also on the truncated list, prices held steady in three states (Indiana, Minnesota and Mississippi) and rose in 18 others, including Florida.

Tampa prices were dropping (3.524, down from 3.424 on June 30 and 3.782 on May 20) while the Florida state average was rising (3.585, up from 3.480 on June 30 and down from 3.824 on May 20). Nationwide, the average was reported at 3.621, down from 3.562 on June 30 and  3.867 on May 20).

According to a map credited to the  American Petroleum Institutegasoline taxes as of January 2011 in 16 states ranked in the highest category, "greater than 48.1." The chart looks at the combined local, state and federal taxes in cents per gallon. Florida was in that highest category (52.8). Ranking at the top and bottom of the list in that category were California (66.1) and Oregon (49.4).

For regular gas locally, the cheapest prices reported were:

  • $3.43 at Costco, 10921 Causeway Blvd. and Interstate 75
  • $3.44 at Sam's Club, 2021 West Brandon Blvd. (near Providence Road)
  • $3.46 at Shell, 934 Lithia Pinecrest and Lumsden roads

For regular gas locally, the highest prices were:

  • $3.59 at Murphy USA, 1110 East Brandon Blvd. (near Mt. Carmel Road)
  • $3.59 at Mobil, 936 East Bloomingdale Ave. and Bell Shoals Road (cash or Mobil card)
  • $3.59 Marathon, 503 North Parsons Ave. and East Clay Avenue
  • $3.59 at Mobil, 612 Lumsden Road and Kings Avenue
  • $3.59 at Mobil, 615 West Bloomingdale Ave. and Kings Road
  • $3.59 at 1640 West Brandon Blvd. and Lakewood Drive
  • $3.57 at Sunoco, 405 East Brandon Blvd. and Lithia Pinecrest Road
  • $3.57 at CITGO, 700 West Brandon Blvd. and Kings Ave.
