Fallen Heroes From All Wars Remembered at Local Memorial (Photos)

The white crosses planted by the Tampa Area Marine Parents Association on a field in the Greater Brandon and Riverview community of Winthrop stood as testament to a community's diligence in remembering fallen heroes from all branches and all U.S. wars.

In preparation for the Aug. 26 "Run for the Fallen" at the Winthrop community, the Tampa Area Marine Parents Association erected a memorial to fallen soldiers.

Thousands of runners were expected at this year's fifth annual run — three times the amount of men, women and children who showed up last year, at E.G. Simmons Park in Ruskin — which was preceded for the first time by a Saturday night candlelight vigil.

Further aiding the effort this year was the permission of Winthrop Town Founders John and Kay Sullivan to allow for the erection of a memorial for a week leading up to the event.

The memorial was comprised of planted white crosses bearing the names of Florida soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Larger white crosses bore the names of fallen soldiers in all U.S. wars. Flags were planted as well for each branch of service.
