Hundreds of students will be testing their math skills in countywide competition later this year but first up are public meetings on bicycle safety and ongoing, online classes on financial management.

This list of "five things to know" includes information, too, about an orientation session for volunteering at the animal shelter and information about the specifics (and deadline) for applying for a sinkhole assistance grant.

  1. The Middle School Math League Competition is scheduled for May 11 at the Florida State Fairgrounds. About 550 students are expected to compete in the contest that requires students to “strategize independently as well as cooperatively within a team”” to solve challenging mathematical problems. Students compete for both individual and team awards. The cost of renting the facility: $5,588.49. (Source: Hillsborough County School Board agenda, Feb. 22, 2011.
  2. Learn more about the draft copy of the Hillsborough County Bicycle Safety Action Plan and offer your views on proposed steps at one of three public meetings. The second of the two meetings is scheduled for March 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bloomingdale Regional Library, at 1906 Bloomingdale Avenue in Valrico.
  3. The call is out for volunteers to serve at Hillsborough County Animal Services, at 440 North Falkenburg Road in the Greater Brandon community of Tampa. The next orientation meeting is at the shelter, March 19 at 10 a.m. Volunteers must be age 16 and up. Space is limited and registrations are required. Call: 813-612-5388. Email: disalvot@hillsboroughcounty.org.
  4. Financial management classes are available online through the Hillsborough County Extension Service through the University of Florida. The classes are short and include workshops and strategies, as well as evaluation questions to check comprehension. The classes: “Developing a Financial Plan” (under 6 minutes), “Who Gets Paid First” (just over 7 minutes), “Credit Reports and Credit Scores” (under 9 minutes).
  5. Hillsborough County homeowners have until March 31 to apply for a Sinkhole Assistance Grant, designed to provide aid for recovering from the damage of sinkhole impacts from January through March 2010. The maximum award is $3,000 and only the property owner of record at time of the sinkhole damage is eligible to apply. Qualifications, documentation necessary and information for applying is available online.
