Five Things To Know: Panhandling Hearing, Strawberry Crest, Veterans Assistance, Dr. Seuss and DNA

A snapshot look at news you can use — or might care to know —about things of interest in your life at home and beyond.

  1. The Hillsborough County Commissioners will hold a public hearing March 2 at 2 o,n, to discuss an ordinance to ban solicitation and panhandling on public roads. The commissioners meet in the second floor conference room of the Fred B. Karl County Center in downtown Tampa.
  2. Strawberry Crest has become the fourth Hillsborough County public high school authorized as an International Baccalaureate World School. The school, at 4691 Gallagher Road in Dover, opened in 2009 with students drawn from Armwood, Plant City and Durant high schools. Strawberry Crest will graduate its first IB diploma students in 2012. The district also has IB programs at King, Hillsborough and Robinson high schools.
  3. Hillsboorugh County Commissioners are set to spend $27,580 to fund an additional veterans service officer. The officer assists veterans and their dependents and survivors in securing federal, state and local benefits. The officer also supports residents living in assisted living facilities, nursing homes and private residences. During fiscal year 2010, each veterans service officer assisted about 8,386 clients. 
  4. Read Across America Day” returns March 2, a nationwide initiative to encourage reading and to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Check out the site that teachers check out to put together their learning activities, games and more.
  5. On this day in history, in 1953, Cambridge University scientists James D. Watson and Frances H.C. Crick announce that they have determined the double-helix structure of DNA, the molecule containing human genes. Check out more, at History.com.
