Five Things To Know Today (Feb. 18): Centenarian, Wrestling, 'Scoundrels' and More

News you can use and just might want to know about a woman turning 100, a novel turning 125 and a high school team looking to bring home its 11th consecutive state title (and 20th state crown overall).

  1. Beatrice “Bee” Shugrue, a resident at , celebrates her 100th birthday today. The centenarian shares her birthday with the birth of a novel that celebrates its 125th anniversary today. Ernest Hemingway would later say this book was the beginning of modern American literature. (Care to guess the name of the book, and its author? Read to the end for the answer!)
  2. The Brandon High School Eagles will weigh in 8:30 a.m. today, and 7:30 a.m. tomorrow, at the Lakeland Center, site of the Florida High School Athletic Association state wrestling finals. Brandon wrestlers in all 14 weight classes have qualified for the tournament. Should Brandon be victorious, the team will bring home its 11th consecutive state title and 20th state championship overall.
  3. Plant City Entertainment stages “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” at its hometown theater at 101 North Thomas Street. Show dates are Feb. 18-19 and 24-26 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. The show is based on the 1988 film of the same title and centers on two competing con men living in the French Riviera.
  4. A visit to TampaGasPrices.com shortly after midnight today found the cheapest reported gas prices were at Sam’s Club, 2021 West Brandon Blvd. and Providence Road ($2.99) and Costco, 10921 Causeway Blvd. and Interstate 75 ($3). Three stations had reported prices of $3.01 and four stations had reported prices of $3.03.   5. On this day in 1885, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was published, written by Samuel Clemens under the pen name Mark Twain.
