Florida-Friendly Landscaping Help

Tips for showcasing healthy lawns on a budget and composting will be covered in July workshops presented by the Hillsborough Extension Office in Seffner.

Interested in improved gardening skills? Showcasing healthy lawns and landscapes on a budget, and still conserve water? Turning trash into treasure? 

The Hillsborough County Extension Service, in cooperation with the University of Florida, offers free classes to promote both healthy and cost-effective lawns.

"Florida-Friendly Landscaping Workshops" are scheduled for July 22 at the Hillsborough Extension Office in Seffner. Online registration is encouraged; classes fill up quickly.

The workshops are hands-on; there is an on-site composting area as well as a cistern to capture rain water.

"Compost Happens" Workshop -- Starts at 10 a.m. / Sponsored by Master Composters of Hillsborough County, Hillsborough County Extension, Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department and the City of Tampa's Department of Solid Waste. / Attendees will receive a free compost bin and thermometer.

"Water-Wise Workshop" -- Starts at 11 a.m. / Covers installing and using micro-irrigation. This irrigation method not only conserves water, but is not as restricted by current water restrictions as traditional in-ground irrigation systems. Residents attending this workshop for the first time will receive one free micro-irrigation kit.
