Get Out: Weekend Planner for Brandon (July 2-4)

A free community picnic, yards sales and a huge fireworks show are all on tap this extended holiday weekend.

As most of us settle in for a three-day weekend, there’s plenty going on around town this Fourth of July weekend. There’s a car show, yard sales and Brandon’s biggest civic event of the year, the Fourth of July parade. And if you don’t have your own party, Limona Village Chapel and Bell Shoals Baptist Church are hosting free events this weekend.

JACOB FOWLER MEMORIAL SERVICE/VISITATION

  • When/Where: July 2-3, 2102 Bell Shoals Road.
  • Why Go: A visitation for Jacob Fowler, a camp counselor who drowned June 27 after a, is set for July 2 at from 4 to 5 p.m. A memorial service, also at Bell Shoals, is at 5 p.m. July 3. Senior Pastor Stephen Rummage will also deliver the sermon, “Why Does God Let Bad Things Happen?" at the regular Sunday July 3 services - 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. The topic of the sermon was picked before Fowler's death. KIDS WORKSHOP

  • When/Where: 9 a.m.-Noon, July 2, 10151 Bloomingdale Ave., Riverview
  • Why Go: The Home Depot offers workshops for children the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshops are designed for ages 5 to 12 and includes projects such as toolboxes, fire trucks, mail organizers, bird houses, bug houses and decorative frames. The workshops include took safety. Each child attending the workshop receives an orange apron and an achievement pin. Call 813-246-5714.

CAR SHOW

  • When/Where: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., July 2, 4334 Bell Shoals Rd, Valrico
  • Why Go: Bloomingdale Pizza hosts a monthly car show the first Saturday of the month in the parking lot of the restaurant. Residents are encouraged to show off their cars and vie for trophy prizes.

JOURNEY TO HOPE DIVORCE SUPPORT GROUP

  • When/Where: 2-3 p.m., July 2, 5049 Bell Shoals Rd, Valrico
  • Why Go: Journey to Hope provides support for separated or divorced residents. Both men and women come to share in a discussion. It meets the first and third Saturday of the month in the ROC Center at St. Stephen Catholic Church. All are welcome. Contact Jeannie Schneider at 813-689-4900, ext. 314.

CELEBRATE AMERICA - SONG OF THE PATRIOT

  • When/Where: 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., July 3, 2102 Bell Shoals Road.
  • Why Go: A patriotic concert with free food and family friendly events is set for  The food and events are set for 4:30-6:30 p.m. Call: 813-689-4229.

YARD SALES

  • When/Where: 7 a.m.-Noon, July 3, 7240 U.S. Highway 301, Riverview
  • Why Go: The Alafia American Legion Post 148 hosts a yard sale every Sunday. Spaces are available for $7 and tables can be rented for $5. The post will serve breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Call: 813-677-6529.

COMMUNITY PICNIC

  • When/Where: 11 a.m.-3 p.m., July 4, 408 Limona Road, Brandon
  • Why Go: will host a July 4 community picnic at the church. The event includes food and a bounce house. Call 813-689-8385.

BRANDON BLAST

  • When/Where: July 4, 459 Brandon Town Center Drive, Brandon
  • Why Go: The annual Brandon Blast is scheduled to take place at . Presented by the Greater Brandon Community Foundation, the event will include a fireworks display, military appearances and recognition, local bands and family entertainment.
  • Cost: Free

FOURTH OF JULY PARADE

  • When/Where: 10 a.m., July 4, Lumsden Road and Parsons Avenue.
  • Why Go: The annual starts with a grand sweep at the corner of Lumsden Road and Parsons Avenue, advancing with a turn west on Robertson Street and a final leg across Kings Avenue.
  • Cost: Free
