Get Out: Weekend Planner for Brandon June 4-5

Yard sales, live theater, farmers market, auditions, a Best Buddies walk and more are among this weekend's activities for Greater Brandon residents. Involved are ECHO, AMVETS, FAOPA, MDHF Productions, the American Legion, Nativity, Center Place and more.

Greater Brandon kicks off in earnest this weekend with live theater productions of “Jekyll & Hyde” and “A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody” as the charity race for honorary mayor of Brandon advances. Also on tap is a farmers market and a series of yard sales, in addition to a Best Buddies walk at Winthrop and more.

FAOPA’s "JEKYLL & HYDE”

  • When/Where: June 3-5 (and June 10-12), HCC at The Regent, 6437 Watson Road, Riverview.
  • Why Go:  The Florida Academy of Performing Arts (FAOPA), in residence at Music Showcase in Brandon, through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, takes to the stage with "Jekyll & Hyde,” directed by Miguel Oquendo. The classic tale of a battle between good and evil is based on the story by Robert Louis Stevenson. The academy will present 10 performances: June 3-5 and June 10-12. Performance times are Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10 general admission and $8 for students, senior and military. / Call: 813-490-ARTS (2787).

MEN’S CLUB SIP AND PUFF

  • When/Where: June 3, 6 p.m., Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association, 619 Vonderburg Drive, Brandon.
  • Why Go: Gentlemen are invited to an evening of cigars, scotch and bourbon plus food. Silent auction featuring hunting, fishing, golf and sports items. / Cost: $25; benefits Barbara Schwabe’s race for honorary mayor of Brandon.

“A LITTLE MURDER NEVER HURT ANYBODY"

  • When/Where: June 3 at 8 p.m., June 4 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and June 5 at 3 p.m., Crown Plaza Hotel, 10221 Princess Palm Ave.
  • Why Go: Dinner and a show, or just watch the show, as the theater company founded by Clint Shepherd takes to the stage with a cast of eight Greater Brandon thespians (two parts have been double-casted). The show is a comedy set at the Perry mansion on New Year’s Eve, where Matthew Perry wants to be rid of his wife, Julia, while she vows to stay alive. Cast in the show are Shepherd, Jolanda Nel, David Hickie, Adam Corso, Corey Wade, Kevin Nickorick, Jessica Cothron and Katie Grey Coleman. Cost: show, $15; meal, $15. / Call: 813-623-6363.

“MAN OF LA MANCHA” AUDITIONS

  • When/Where: June 3-4, 7 p.m., Nativity Catholic Church Youth Center, 705 East Brandon Blvd., Brandon.
  • Why Go: “Dream the Impossible Dream” with your chance for a role in the Nativity production of the award-winning musical, written by Dale Wasserman with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion. Performance dates are Aug. 19-20 and 26-27.

ECHO YARD SALE

  • When/Where: June 4, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., 507 N Parsons Ave.
  • Why Go:  The Emergency Care Help Organization hosts a monthly yard sale to raise funds for future projects. Browse a variety of new and gently used goods available for purchase. / Call: 813-685-0935.

AMVETS LAST YARD SALE

  • When/Where: June 4, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., 318 Pauls Drive.
  • Why Go:  This has been advertised as the final yard sale for the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary of Post 44. Auxiliary members thank the community for its support over the past 12 years. Yard sales donations no longer will be accepted. Yard sale proceeds benefit the post's building fund. / Call: 813-651-4444 or 813-690-2693.

BEST BUDDIES FRIENDSHIP WALK

  • When/Where: June 4, Winthrop Town Centre, 11252 Winthrop Main Street, Riverview. Registration is from 7:45-8:30 a.m. The 5K-Run is at 8:45 a.m.; 1K and 5K walks, 9 a.m. Friendship Festival, 10:30 a.m.-noon.
  • Why Go: Registration is under “the big white tent” for the First Annual Best Buddies 5k Run-Walk, benefiting middle and high school chapters of Best Buddies, a global organization that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Cost: Free. Participants encouraged to raise $50 or more. Those who do will receive a race T-shirt designed for Best Buddies by artist Romero Britto.  

SATURDAY NIGHT SWING DANCE

  • When/Where: June 4, 7–11 p.m., , 610 Oakfield Drive, Brandon.
  • Why Go: Strap on your dancing shoes and let loose to the sounds of Big Band, jazz and oldies hits. Experienced or a novice, this event is open to all skill levels. Price: $8 / Call: 813-966-4788.

MEN'S HEALTH FAIR

  • When/Where: June 4, Noon-3 p.m., 1277 Kingsway Road.
  • Why Go:  The Brandon Family Support Center is set to host a health fair for men. / Call: 813-740-4634 or visit www.familysupport.org.

YOUTH TRIATHLON SERIES

  • When/Where: June 4, FishHawk Ranch YMCA Express, 16144 Churchview Drive, Lithia.
  • Why Go: Children can swim, bike and run their way to a healthy lifestyle during the YMCA Youth Triathlon Series. / Call: 813-651-4200.

FARMERS’ MARKET AT PARK SQUARE

  • When/Where: June 5, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., 16132 Churchview Drive.
  • Why Go:  The FishHawk Ranch Farmers' Market is held on the first Sunday of the month in to master-planned development’s Park Square. Fresh seafood, baked goods, herbs and spices and unique gift ideas.

AMERICAN LEGION YARD SALE

  • When/Where: June 5,  7 a.m.-noon, Alafia American Legion Post 148, 7240 US Highway 301 S., Riverview.
  • Why Go: The Alafia American Legion Post 148 holds a yard sale every Sunday from 7 a.m. to noon at the post, 7240 U.S. 301, Riverview. Spaces are available for $7 and tables can be rented for $5. The post will serve breakfast from 9 -11 a.m. / Call: (813) 677-6529.
