Brandon Regional Hospital Selects, Doesn’t Yet Name, CEO Replacement

It’s been one month since Mike Fencel left his job at Brandon Regional Hospital, and his replacement as CEO has been decided.

Who it is, however, has not yet been announced.

That announcement will be made in February, according to Patty Montgomery, director of marketing and public relations for Brandon Regional, a holding of the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).

“We know who it is but things need to be squared away before we make the official announcement,” Montgomery said in an interview Jan. 25. “The new CEO will be starting next month.”

As for Fencel, he has a job with Health Management Associates (HMA), as chief executive officer of its North Florida Division, which includes 11 affiliated hospitals in North Florida. Fencel’s responsibilities include as well managing partnerships with Shands HealthCare and Orlando Health.

Fencel in Brandon has served as chairman of the board of the Greater Brandon Community Foundation and as president of both the Rotary Club of Brandon and the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce.

During his tenure at Brandon Regional, the hospital grew by more than 150 beds and the open heart surgery program grew in stature in the Tampa Bay region.

HCA owns and operates about 164 hospitals and about 106 freestanding surgery centers in 20 states and in London.

HMA has 66 health organizations in 15 states.
