Hillsborough Air Pollution Advisory Issued as Ozone Levels Rise

Florida fires and dry conditions have led to elevated ozone levels. Unhealthy levels of pollutants of particular concern for sensitive groups, including the eldery, the very young and people with pre-existing respiratory ailments.

The Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County has issued an air pollution advisory due to elevated levels of pollutants in the atmosphere.

This advisory went into effect at 2 p.m. today, June 16, and remains in effect until dusk Friday, June 17.

“Part of it is based on the fires we having throughout the state," said Tom Tamanini, a spokesperson for the Environmental Protection Commission. "We are seeing a lot of fires and dry conditions statewide so we just like to tell people with any kind of respiratory issues, so they can take precautions."

Based on readings at multiple air stations, the potential is for ozone levels to reach an Air Quality Index between 101-150, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, according to a county release announcing the advisory. "Due to various fires throughout the state, elevated particulate matter readings have been seen,” it notes.

Those with pre-existing respiratory ailments, the elderly, or the very young may want to take this into consideration when planning outside activities.
