Local Events for Older Americans Month

Hillsborough County officials at facilities throughout the county — including the on Sadie Street and the Brandon Senior Center on Parsons Avenue — will be joining the nationwide commemoration of Older Americans Month with activities advancing the adage, "Never Too Old To Play."

Since 1963 the month of May has been designated a good time to value the contributions of senior citizens to the broader community while recognizing as well the value of staying active.

The aim is to "encourage our seniors to stay engaged, active and involved in their own lives and in their communities," notes a report released through Hillsborough Count Aging Services. "Studies show lifelong participation in social, creative and physical activities has proven health benefits, including retaining mobility, muscle mass, and cognitive abilities."

Toward that end, county officials this month have scheduled the events noted below.

Hillsborough County Annual Elderly Affairs Day

• May 10 at the Oaks at Riverview Community and Senior Center, at 101 E. Kirby St. in Tampa.

• Co-sponsored by Hillsborough County Aging Services and the Tampa Housing Authority, the event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with door prizes, food, music and live entertainment.

Hillsborough County's Star Struck Seniors' Prom

• May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the at 502 E. Sadie St.

• Live guitarist, featuring music from the '40s, '50s and '60s.

• A king and queen will be crowned.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day

Hillsborough County Aging Services, for National Senior Healt and Fitness Day, will be providing exercise programs at each of the county's eight senior centers, including two in Eastern Hillsborough County, as noted below:

• Brandon Senior Center, 612 E. Parsons Ave.

• Lutz Senior Center, 112 First Ave. N.W.

• Oaks at Riverview, 101 E. Kirby St., Tampa

• Plant City Senior Center, 1205 S. Waller St.

• Ruskin Senior Center, 905 6th St. S.E.

• Town ‘N Country Senior Center, 7606 Paula Dr., Tampa

• Westshore Senior Center, 4102 West Spruce St., Tampa

• Wimauma Senior Center, 5714 North St.
