‘Faces of the Fallen’ Remembers Hillsborough’s Fallen Soldiers

The Washington Post keeps a database of the fallen soldiers of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. We remember here 28 of the 6,013 soldiers, whose home states were noted as towns and cities of Greater Brandon and Hillsborough County.

By the numbers is a stark way of remembering human life, but it is one way to report the cost of war on this Memorial Day, lest we never forget the toll that has been paid in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The state of California has paid the highest toll in the number of U.S. service members who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, with Texas and Florida ranking second and third, according to the “Faces of the Fallen” database maintained by The Washington Post.

The searchable database reports on the 6,013 soldiers who, as of this Memorial Day posting, have lost their lives in Operation Iraqi Freedom (4,442) and Operation Enduring Freedom (1,571).

The report’s latest home state breakdown shows that California leads the country with 624 fallen soldiers, followed by Texas (534), Florida (294), Pennsylvania (263) and New York (262).

The database is searchable by age, year of death, home state and military branch. It is updated at least twice monthly from military releases, news service reports and local newspaper stories.

An analysis of the database shows that Hillsborough County, including the Greater Brandon communities of Brandon, Hillsborough, Lithia, Plant City and Seffner (as categorized by the researcher), accounts for 11 of the fallen soldiers, with Ruskin, Tampa and Thonotossasa accounting for another 17 soldiers.

(Editor’s Note: An earlier Brandon Patch report, , notes 43 soldiers with engravings at markers at the Joe Chillura Courthouse Square Memorial in downtown Tampa. This list includes soldiers who at their time of death were not from Hillsborough but had once lived there or had strong ties to the county.)

Overall, according to The Washginton Post database, 22 of the county’s fallen soldiers hailing from Hillsborough served in the Army; the remaining six served in the Marines. The soldiers’ ages ranged from 19 to 56, with 25 the median and 28 the average. Collectively, the soldiers lived 782 years.

The database includes, for each soldier, hometown, age, date of death, unit and a brief description of the incident that led to the soldier’s death. Related links to coverage and tributes is included as well. (Click each soldier’s name to link to the database section applicable to that soldier, for additional information.)
