Lanes Remain Closed After Roadway Collapses at Windhorst Road and Parsons Avenue

County officials are not sure what caused the 6-foot section of roadway to cave in at the intersection.

Several lanes at the intersection of Windhorst Road and Parsons Avenue in Brandon are still closed after a section of the roadway collapsed.

County officials are warning drivers to avoid the intersection.

Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department crews first thought a 16-inch sewage pipeline beneath the intersection might have caused the collapse of the 6-foot-square section of roadway but the pipe was found to be intact.

“Crews excavated the sewer line and it is fine so the collapse was not due to a break in the sewage line,” said Public Utilities Department spokeswoman Michelle Van Dyke.

“At this point we don’t know why the road collapsed so we are transitioning it out to public works.”

Barricades remain in place with one northbound lane of Parsons and the westbound turn lanes on Windhorst still closed.

Additional detours and lane closures are possible as crews dig up the line for inspection and any necessary repairs.

Motorists who must travel through the intersection are warned to expect delays.

It is not known at this time how long the work will take or how long traffic will be impacted, Van Dyke said.
