Learn the Art of Canning Fruit, Pickling and More At Seffner Workshops

Your granny probably knew how, but home canning is becoming a lost art. It doesn't have to be if you take advantage of a new series of courses being offered by the Hillsborough County Extension, 5339 County Road 579 in Seffner.

Participants will learn how to preserve fruits, pickle vegetables at the height of their freshness to enjoy later through the classes, which run through November.

Students will also learn how to make jams and pickles, can fruits and tomatoes, learn about needed equipment, how to use a boiling water bath canner and what can and cannot be altered in a recipe.

A $5 donation will be requested to cover the cost of food and supplies.

Directions, recipes and resource lists will be available to take home, and instructors will demonstrate equipment and procedures for canning.

The first class on jam and fruit is slated for noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 9.

Classes sometime fill up quickly, so prospective students are advised to register online.
