Marking Memorial Day in Greater Brandon and Beyond

There will be plenty of activities for those looking to mark the Memorial Day holiday in and around the Bay area May 29. From discounts at area attractions for military personnel to several ceremonies to pig roast, check out out our list below. 

• Memorial Day Service / Serenity Meadows Memorial Park, 6919 Providence Rd, Riverview / 8:30 a.m. / 813-677-9494 / Dedicated to those who have sacrificed their lives for freedom. Guest speaker:  retired Air Force Maj. Kirk Faryniasz. Music by the Silvertones of First Baptist Church of Brandon.

• Memorial Day Pig Roast /  1215 West Brandon Blvd. / 4-7 p.m. / O'Toole's is going Cuban with Papa Vegas Mojo Pork and drink specials all day.

• Memorial Day Weekend Reopening / Veterans Memorial Park and Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr. Veterans Museum, 3602 U.S. 301 North, Tampa, / 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturdays, Sundays and patriotic holidays / 813-744-5502 / Closed since January, the Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park and museum reopened in time for Memorial Day remembrances. The $2.5 million expansion and renovation continues through November. 

• Memorial Day Concert and Tribute to Veterans / Curtis Hixon Park, 600 North Ashley Drive, Tampa / 2 p.m. / 813-924-3770 / Riverfront concert with Derric Johnson’s Liberty Voices,  the Steinbrenner High School band and a special presentation of Taps by combined forces.

• $5 Memorial Day At MOSI /Museum of Science and Industry, 4801 East Fowler Ave. / 9 a.m. / 813-987-6000 /Active and retired military personnel, EMT's, firefighters and police officers with valid identification get $5 admission to MOSI. Up to six additional family members and guests get $5 off regular priced admission. 

• Memorial Day at the Military Museum / 2050 34th Way North, Largo /10 a.m. / 727-539-8371 / Food, rides and games including rock climbing, power jump, military dress up photos and live entertainment. / Price: $8 general admission, $5 children

• Memorial Day Weekend Beach Party / Shephard's Beach Resort, 601 South Gulfview Blvd. / 1 p.m. /727-441-6875 / Live music all day.  

• Memorial Day at the Zoo / Lowry Park Zoo, 1101 West Sligh Ave., Tampa / 9:30 a.m. / 813-935-8552 / Free admission for active duty or retired military personnel with photo identification. Free admission for up to three direct dependents.
