Save Money, Water With These Tips for Summer Lawns

How do you know when your yard needs water? How much water is needed during the summer months? The Southwest Water Management District (SWFWMD) offers some answers as well as the adage, "Watch the Weather, Wait To Water."

 

Summer rains bring pocketbook gains for savvy homeowners who, “Watch the Weather, Wait To Water.” That’s the advice coming from the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), where officials seek to raise awareness about the most prudent lawn-irrigation practices.

Here’s What You Need To Know About Summer Lawn Irrigation:

  • During the summer months of June,  July, August and September, yards need no more than 3/4 of an inch of water every two or three days.
  • Did Mother Nature dump enough rain to meet that requirement? If so, turn off your irrigation system. You can turn it back on when needed.

Does Your Yard Need Water?

Here’s the best way to determine whether water from rain or irrigation is crucial. If you spot the following, water is needed:

  • Grass blades are folded in half lengthwise on at least one-third of the yard.
  • Grass blades appear bluish-grey in color.
  • Grass blades do not spring back. Walk on the lawn. Do footprints remain minutes later?
  • Ready to “Watch the Weather, Wait to Water?” Keep in mind these tips:
  • If your yard shows signs of needing water, check your local forecast to determine if rain is on the way.
  • Use a rain gauge to determine how much rain your yard has received.
  • If you have a rain sensor (a switching device activated by rainfall) make sure it is working properly.
  • Take full advantage of the rain. If you have gutter downspouts, make sure they are directed into the lawn or other landscaped areas.
  • Install a rain barrel to capture excess rainwater.
