Veterans Day 2012: What's Open, What's Closed in Hillsborough County?

Veterans Day typically is observed "on the 11th day of the 11th month at 11 a.m.," but it’s officially observed tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 12, as a federal holiday, which means mail service won’t run and most government offices will be closed.

Here’s a rundown of what's open and what's closed in Hillsborough County for Veterans Day 2012:

Hillsborough County Schools

The School District of Hillsborough County will observe Veterans Day on Nov. 12, which means no school for students. So, too, for those attending Hillsborough Community College, including at the Brandon campus, at 10414 East Columbus Drive in Tampa, and at the Brandon satellite campus, at HCC at The Regent,  at 6437 Watson Road in Riverview.

Hillsborough County Government

The county’s administrative offices, neighborhood service centers, libraries, Head Start facilities, recreation centers, nutrition sites and senior centers will be closed Nov. 12.

Hillsborough County Trash Pickup

In the county, residents worried the holiday will interrupt their trash pickup services can relax. The county’s solid waste collection services will run as normal on Nov. 12. This includes garbage, yard waste and recyclable pickups for unincorporated Hillsborough.

The county’s landfills, community collection centers, transfer facilities and the Resource Recovery Facility are also open.

What’s Open on Monday?

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and other city and county emergency services, such as police, fire and ambulance, will be in operation.

Hillsborough County Animals Services is planning a special promotion on Monday, Nov. 12. Dubbed Pets For Vets, the promotion runs from 11 a.m. 5 p.m. During this time, all active or retired military personnel will get half-off pricing for pet adoptions at the county’s 440 N. Falkenburg Road location.

The county’s regional parks are also open on Monday. They include Lettuce Lake, Lake Park, Aldermans Ford, Edward Medard, Flatwoods, Lithia Springs, Morris Bridge and Lake Rogers, among others.
