Top Nonprofit Takes Top Spot At The Head Of The Parade

The Community Roundtable each year selects and invites the town's top charity to ride on its parade float. In 2013, it was the GFWC Brandon Service League.

How did the members of the GFWC Brandon Service League feel about being the honored charity at the 2013 Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade?

"It's absolutely awesome, we are so excited," said Melinda White. "It's a club effort and a privilege."

Pat Elam agreed.

"We're over 50-years-old and we're just humbled to be recognized after all these years," she said.

With her was Sandy Pullinger, a past recipient of the Alice B. Tompkins Community Service Award, presented by the Community Roundtable each year to a deserving citizen.

"We're definitely honored to be the volunteer organization of the year," she said. "Our whole purpose is service."

Elam elaborated.

"We have a Very Special Arts Festival every year, for kids with special needs," she said. "We raise funds at our annual Holiday Home Tour, we have a Spring Fling fundraiser and we're concentrating on raising money for three $1,000 scholarships for students."

Past recipients of the Nonprofit of the Year Award were the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO) and the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Organization.

Members of the top nonprofit are invited each year to ride as dignitaries on the Community Roundtable's parade float.
