MAhole' Musings: What Will the Man From Mars Eat Next?

Well, here we are, the Rapture has come and gone and as far as I can tell me and all my sinner friends and family are still here. So much for the outer fringe of religion being believed — yet again.

And people wonder why this country is not as religious as it once was.

No, seriously. We are not.

Nor are we, as a whole, as politically interested as we once were. There was a time when the idea of the ‘middle-class’ meant so much more than merely referring  to family income levels. There was a time when what we now refer to as the political or religious moderates were the majority. A time when most Americans could attend the church of their choice or vote for whomever they chose without it being scrutinized within an inch of its life.

Of course more and more of us are falling away from religion, why would we want to be associated with “those people." When nutcases like the Phelps family or Terry Jones or Harold Camping gather the spotlight it takes much away from the religiously inclined who are doing good work day by day.

When all anyone can talk about is whether Father What-a-Waste really diddled a choir boy back in the 80’s and whether the Pope even cares, it diminishes every potential churchgoer’s interest in attending. Sorry, but I have better things to do with my time and money than give it to what is essentially a mega-corporation that couldn’t truly give an damn about me and my family.

The same goes for politics.

Sure I was mad as hell this past November and seriously considered not voting rather than see some slicky Ricky in the governor’s mansion or tea-bagger in the Capitol Building, but at the same time I knew some things had to change. And once again we were duped.

Meet the new bosses — same as the old bosses— but now with social agendas instead of a work ethic. Why create jobs when you can mix politics with religion and force your personal relationship with the Bible on those of us who are not quite so inclined? Here's your rapture folks, being handed to you in the form of laws that insist we teach voodoo in place of science; kick the less fortunate to the curb; create and enforce laws that institutionalize discrimination, and make the rich richer, the poor dumber and the middle class an endangered species.

Oh well, better luck in December of 2012.

Maybe by then Satan will stop hiding behind those who proclaim to preach what is in our best interest. I’d prefer to see the schmuck in all his glory.
