Edward Willcox Taught 3 Generations Of Music Students

The Willcox Academy of Music in Brandon loses its owner namesake, who died three days short of his 97th birthday. A Celebration of Life is set for July 2.

A celebration of life is planned for today, July 2, at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop, for Edward Willcox, owner of Willcox Academy of Music in Brandon, on what would have been his 97th birthday, according to a news report.

Edward George Willcox, 96, died June 29, 2013, at his home in Brandon, leaving behind his wife, four daughters, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, according to a TBO.com report. A fifth daughter died before him.

"He and his wife opened The Willcox Academy of Music in Brandon where they both taught piano and organ to 3 generations of students," according to the report.

The celebration of life is from 7 to 10 p.m. at Barn Theatre at Winthrop, at 11349 Bloomingdale Ave.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Batten Disease Support and Research Association. Willcox's great grandson, Westley, 6, reportedly suffers from the neurodegenerative disease, which has confined him to a wheelchair and from which he suffers seizures, blindness, dementia and will soon lose his life. Because the disease is so rare there is no government funding and depend solely on private donations.
