17 Felonies, 10 Misdemeanors Credited to Detective's 'Attention to Detail'

Detective Alfredo Penalvert earns the third-quarter Law Enforcement Deputy of the Quarter award from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, with a watch of appreciation from Bill Currie Ford. The string of charges stemmed from bicycle thefts in Brandon

Annually each quarter, members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, at the jail assembly room in Greater Brandon, meet to bestow upon a law enforcement deputy an award for consistently displaying "high motivation" on the job.

Detective Alfredo Penalvert, for the third quarter of 2011, received the honor, which brings with it a watch of appreciation from Bill Currie Ford.

Penalvert's distinction stems from a case involving bicycles stolen from a townhome in Brandon, which Penalvert found on display at a local pawn shop.

"Once the bicycles were positively identified by the victim, a fingerprint comparison was obtained from the pawn ticket and a lead was developed," said Major Mike Perotti, in reading from the prepared remarks at the Sept. 14 awards ceremony, at 520 North Falkenburg Road. "The suspect was identified and arrested."

But it didn't end with that one incident.

Penalvert conducted "a thorough interview", which led the suspect to confess to numerous other burglaries as well as to show the detective the various locations at which the burglaries took place.

"The suspect was eventually charged with 17 felonies and 10 misdemeanors," Perotti said. "Detective Penalvert's attention to detail and dedication solved these crimes."
