Bicyclist Killed in Dover Traffic Crash

Jessy James Smith of Plant City was killed when he was struck by a Jeep while crossing State Road 574 in the Greater Brandon Community of Dover, the FHP reports.

A bicyclist was killed Tuesday night after he was struck by a car in the Greater Brandon community of Dover, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

Officials said Jessy James Smith, 29, of Plant City, was crossing State Road 574, east of Sydney Dover Road, around 8:45 p.m. when he was hit by a Jeep Cherokee. Smith, who was thrown from his bike onto the top of the Jeep and then onto the roadway, died at the scene.

The driver, Belisario Marales-Agueda, 26, of Dover, had been traveling westbound on State Road 574 when he failed to yield to traffic while crossing the east and westbound lanes, according to an FHP media release.

The incident is still under investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time.
