Body of Riverview Man Pulled From Car in Alafia River

Detectives believe the man's car was heading north on Interstate 75 on June 30 when the driver lost control and drove over a barrier and into the river.

UPDATE: The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the man who was pulled from the car in the Alafia River July 26. David Lawrence Hughes, 49, of Riverview had been reported missing by his family June 30.

Several northbound lanes on Interstate 75 were closed for a couple hours July 26 while authorities removed from the Alafia River the body of a Riverview man who crashed there June 30.

Detectives are still investigating the incident but they believe the car, a blue 2000 Ford Explorer, was heading north on I-75 at the time of the June 30 accident. The vehicle reportedly came to rest on its roof, submerged seven feet below the river's surface, after the driver lost control and drove over a barrier and into the river.
