Brandon Man Identified In Fatal I-4 Accident

John P. Meyer had stopped at the side of the highway when he was hit by a tractor trailer.

A man who died on Interstate 4 after he was hit by a tractor trailer has been identified as John P. Meyer, Jr., 44, of Brandon.

Meyer was driving a 2005 Ford pickup truck east on I-4 when he stopped on the shoulder near the entrance ramp to Mango Road, at 9:47 a.m. on Aug. 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Meyer then got out of the pickup and was hit by a Publix tractor trailer driven by Richard Scott Basel, 46, of Lakeland. The victim died at the scene.

Meyer’s identity had been held back pending notification of family members, who live out of state.

The crash and resulting investigation closed the outside lane of I-4 and the entrance ramp for two hours.

The outside lane then re-opened, and the entrance ramp remained closed for another hour.

This incident remains under investigation.
