Brandon Man Recounts Baseball Bat Attack During Road-Rage Incident

Charlie Mabry talked to WTSP 10 News about his ordeal during a road-rage incident May 14, in which deputies said he was repeatedly struck with a baseball bat by another Brandon motorist.

A Brandon man who was beaten with a baseball bat during a road-rage incident spoke about his ordeal to WTSP 10 News.

Charlie Mabry, who had been hospitalized with a swollen black eye, dislocated wrist and eight staples in his head, recounted Monday morning's ordeal that started near Providence road.

Mabry told the news station the situation started when he swerved to hit another driver, Cheng Hsieh of Brandon, whose car was partially in the roadway.

"As I started to turn, he started to flick me off and curse at me," Mabry told 10 News.

But Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies say Mabry failed to use a turn signal, which led to the two men yelling at one another and eventually stopping their cars near Heather Lakes Boulevard and Barmere Lane.

That's when Hsieh armed himself with a stun gun, according to deputies, which prompted Mabry to back his Nissan Altima into the door of Hsieh's Mercedes.

"When he jumped out of the car and reached under the seat, first thing that went through my mind was I'm being shot," Mabry told 10 News. "I proceeded by doing the only thing I could think of. I hit reverse."

Hsieh then allegedly used a baseball bat to strike Mabry "several times in the head, face and arms," sheriff's office spokesperson Debbie Carter said.

Hsieh, 41, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was released on $7,500 bond, according to jail records.

Mabry may also face charges for his role in the incident, the sheriff's office said, although he told 10 News that as of Tuesday he had not been interviewed by detectives or notified about any potential charges.
