Cimmaron Run Drive Shooter, Dead Man Identified as Brothers-in-Law

The two men involved in the fatal shooting Oct. 29 in Valrico have been identified as Shawn A. Berg and his brother-in-law, John Danco. Danco was found dead at Berg's home after Berg called 911 to report that he had shot an intruder to his home.

The two men involved in the Oct. 29 fatal shooting at 2005 Cimmaron Run Drive in Valrico have been identified by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office as Shawn A. Berg, 49, who resides at the home, and his brother-in-law, John Danco, 46, who was found dead in the area of the garage.

Danco, who also lived in Valrico, reportedly had an "ongoing dispute" with Berg "over various family issues," according to the sheriff's report. It notes that Berg called the sheriff's office at 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 to report that he had "just shot an intruder to his home."

According to the Oct. 30 sheriff's report, Danco lived in unit No. 203 at 1802 St. Cloud Ave. and was married to Berg's sister. Allegedly, Danco threatened Berg and his family "just prior to the shooting." Then, at about 11:30 p.m., Danco "arrived at the residence and kicked in the garage door and was shot by Berg."

Detectives obtained a search warrant Oct. 30 and reportedly found "methamphetamine and a controlled substance" at Berg's home. Berg was taken into custody, facing charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance.

The investigation into the shooting was continuing.

Ken Wilson, who said he was the first homeowner on Cimmaron Run Drive and now is the vice president of the homeowners association, was interviewed as he left for work Oct. 30.

"We had a meeting the other night and we were talking about [how there] might be some activity going on here,” Wilson said, as his car idled near the home at 2005 Cimmaron Drive, where the forensic investigation was under way. He did not comment further on that observation.

As for the fatal shooting, "This is just out of the ordinary,” Wilson said. “I’ve lived here for 25 years and nothing like this ever came even close to happening."
