Counselor Back at Work Day After Alleged Shooting at Brandon Mental Health Center

Sarah Pollard Hughey reportedly shot a man at her office at Hughey Behavioral Inc. She was interviewed by detectives and has not been charged.

A mental health counselor who allegedly shot a man at her clinic in Brandon yesterday was back at work today, Oct. 18, less than 24 hours after the shooting.

Sarah Pollard Hughey is the owner of Hughey Behavioral Inc., 9350 Bay Plaza Blvd., Suite 120, where the shooting occurred at 4:50 p.m. Oct. 17.

Hughey, 50, shot Anthony Cornelius Howard, 30, in the right shoulder, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Hughey and Howard had known each other for several months, but detectives are still trying to establish the nature of their relationship.

“We are still trying to establish what happened. There have been conflicting stories,” said Debbie Carter, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

According to her company’s website, Hughey has treated patients with mental health and addiction issues for the past 15 years.

It is not unusual for mental health counselors to have concealed weapons permits for their own safety although it not known if Hughey had her own gun.

“In my practice, I encourage people to make their needs a priority so that they can live happier and more balanced lives," Hughey wrote on her website. "Often this includes addressing issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship/couples issues, work issues, grief / loss and addictions."

Detectives are still investigating the shooting. Check back with Brandon Patch for updates on this story.
