Westbound I-4 Lanes Reopen After Morning Crash; Onlooker Delays Persist

Two early morning crashes on Interstate 4 in Seffner had traffic backed up for miles.

UPDATE: All lanes of I-4 in Seffner are reopened. However there are still onlooker delays as crews clean up at the scene.

Crashes on the interstate made driving a nightmare for commuters this morning in the Brandon area.

One early morning accident in Seffner had traffic backed up for several miles.

The first crash occurred around 6 a.m. on Interstate 4 in Seffner when traffic slowed in front of a traffic trailer, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The tractor trailer failed to stop in time and struck the rear of a Honda and a Chevrolet pickup truck.

The tractor trailer and Honda veered to the inside shoulder and the Chevy veered to the right shoulder and then struck a Buick.

The crash closed all but one lane of westbound I-4 and had traffic backed up for several miles during the busiest hours of the early morning commutte.

There was also a crash involving a motorcycle on the I-4 entrance ramp in the area this morning.

"We had one person taken to Tampa General Hospital and another taken to St. Joseph's Hospital as a result of the crashes," said Sgt. Steve Gaskins of the Florida Highway Patrol.

what do you mean by onlooker delays. People coming up on an accident scene have no clue what to expect and should slow down. Emergency workers or accident victims could be in the roadway. I suppose you think in order to avoid some traffic delays, drivers should just whiz by accidents at 70 to 80 miles an hour. I'm tired of radio stations chastizing drivers for slowing down at accident scenes, That's the right thing to do and whomever wrote this article needs to rethink their position.

thanks John - that's an excellent point

Valid point but one of the main contributors to this accident were the rubber neckers slowing down in the west boud lanes to look at an accident that had occurred in the east bound lanes just prior to this one.
